Flutter Layout System
Arranging UI with Row, Column, Stack, Flex
Flutter layout is similar to CSS Flexbox but everything is widget-based.
Row (horizontal), Column (vertical), Stack (overlap) are the basic 3 elements, with Expanded and Flexible distributing remaining space.
Core layout rule: Parent passes constraints to child, child determines its size within constraints, parent sets final position.
Implementation Steps
1
Practice basic horizontal/vertical arrangement with Row/Column
2
Ratio-based space distribution with Expanded/Flexible
3
Implement overlay UI with Stack + Positioned
4
Implement responsive layout with LayoutBuilder and MediaQuery
Pros
- ✓ More predictable layout behavior than CSS
- ✓ Visual layout debugging is easy in DevTools
Cons
- ✗ Unbounded errors (ListView inside Column etc.) often encountered by beginners
- ✗ Deep nesting reduces readability
Use Cases
Login/signup form layout
Dashboard card grid arrangement
